Promise

A promise in Scripture is God's committed word — a pledge He binds Himself to keep, always fulfilled in Christ.

First appearance in the Bible
Genesis 3:15.The first divine promise in Scripture is a rescue: the seed of the woman who will crush the serpent — the gospel in seed form.
Biblical meaning
A promise in Scripture is not a hope or a wish — it is God's committed word. From Genesis to Revelation the Bible is a chain of promises: to Adam and Eve, to Noah, to Abraham, to Moses, to David, and finally the New Covenant promise fulfilled in Christ. God binds Himself, sometimes with signs (a rainbow, a name change, a cup) so we know He will not break His word. 'God is not human, that he should lie' (Num 23:19). Every promise finds its 'Yes' in Christ. To be a believer is to live on the promises of a God who keeps them.

Genesis
The seed of the woman (Gen 3:15); the rainbow (Gen 9); Abraham's land, seed, blessing (Gen 12; 15; 17).
Exodus / Law
'I will be your God and you will be my people' (Lev 26:12).

The promise of an everlasting throne (2 Sam 7).

New Covenant promised — a new heart, a new spirit, a knowing of God (Jer 31; Ezek 36).

Common misunderstandings
Claim
“Every promise in the Bible is for me personally.”
What Scripture says
Some promises were made to specific people in specific covenants. But every promise finds its 'Yes' in Christ, and every believer in Him becomes an heir of the promise (Gal 3:29).
Claim
“If God delays, He has forgotten His promise.”
What Scripture says
'The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness' (2 Pet 3:9). Delay is not denial.
Living the text
Write down the promises God has given you — from Scripture, from your prayer life, from His clear word to you. Read them out loud when the ground shakes. Hold Him to them, not out of demand, but out of trust. He is not embarrassed by being reminded of what He said.
Prayer
Faithful God, You have never broken a promise. Anchor me to Your Word today. Where I am waiting, help me wait; where I am wavering, hold me steady. Every promise is Yes in Jesus. Amen.
