Grace
chen (חֵן) / charis (χάρις)
Grace is the free, undeserved favour of God — kindness given at His own cost to people who could never earn it.
Scripture first
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.”
First appearance in the Bible
Genesis 6:8.'But Noah found favour (chen) in the eyes of the LORD.' The first mention of grace stands over one man against a whole flooded world.
Biblical meaning
Grace is the free, undeserved kindness of God given at His own cost. It is not a reward for good behaviour or a payment for religious effort. It is the wide, quiet current of God's favour running under a life that never earned it. Grace saves — 'by grace you have been saved' — and then grace keeps saving. Every breath, every second chance, every ability to obey is fuelled by the same current. The Bible ends with a whisper of it: 'The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God's people' (Rev 22:21).

Noah
Grace begins in Scripture as unmerited favour (Gen 6:8).
Exodus
'I will have grace on whom I have grace' (Ex 33:19).

'From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace' (John 1:16).

'By the grace of God I am what I am' (1 Cor 15:10); 'My grace is sufficient' (2 Cor 12:9).

Common misunderstandings
Claim
“Grace makes obedience optional.”
What Scripture says
Paul's answer is emphatic: 'Shall we sin so that grace may increase? By no means!' (Rom 6:1-2). Grace teaches us to say no to what harms us (Titus 2:11-12).
Claim
“I can lose God's grace by failing.”
What Scripture says
Grace is not a mood God is in with you. It is the ground you stand on (Rom 5:2). Failure sends you back to it, not away from it.
Living the text
Refuse to measure God's love by your last twenty-four hours. Grace was true when you did well, and it is true today. Live from grace, not for it — and let it soften how you speak to yourself and to everyone whose failure resembles your own.
Prayer
Father, Your grace was there before I asked for it and will be there long after I stop deserving it. Let me rest in it today, and let it spill out onto everyone I meet. Amen.
