Mercy
Mercy is God withholding the judgment we have earned and giving compassion to the weak, the guilty, and the desperate.
Scripture first
“He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.”
First appearance in the Bible
Genesis 19:16.The angels take Lot by the hand and lead him out of Sodom 'for the LORD was merciful to them.' The first named mercy is a rescue Lot did not ask for well.
Biblical meaning
Mercy is God withholding what we have earned and giving what we could never buy. It is the tax collector's prayer answered, the prodigal's father running, the leper cleansed at a touch, the thief on the cross welcomed home. Mercy is not softness on sin — it is strength that lifts the fallen. Where grace gives, mercy rescues. Scripture makes mercy one of God's favourite names: 'the Father of compassion and God of all comfort' (2 Cor 1:3).

Genesis
God's mercy rescues Lot and preserves Noah (Gen 6-8; 19).
Exodus
'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy' (Ex 33:19).
Psalms
David appeals to God's mercy after his fall (Ps 51).
Gospels
Jesus is moved with mercy (splagchnizomai) at every crowd, leper, and widow (Matt 9:36).

'God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ' (Eph 2:4-5).

Common misunderstandings
Claim
“Mercy means God ignores sin.”
What Scripture says
Mercy meets sin at the cross, not around it. Justice was satisfied there so mercy could be free (Rom 3:26).
Claim
“I have to clean up before I ask for mercy.”
What Scripture says
The tax collector prayed 'have mercy on me, a sinner' — and went home justified (Luke 18:13-14). Come dirty. That is the point.
Living the text
Stop rehearsing why God should not love you today. Mercy is not embarrassed by your weakness — it was written for it. Then turn outward: be one of those people through whom mercy leaks into the world. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Prayer
Merciful Father, I have earned less than what You keep giving. Meet me at the throne of grace and let Your mercy meet whoever I meet today. Amen.
