Intercession is prayer that stands between someone and what threatens them — pleading with God on another's behalf.

First appearance in the Bible
Genesis 18:23.Abraham pleads for Sodom: 'Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?' The Bible's first intercession is a friend of God arguing for mercy.
Biblical meaning
Intercession is prayer that stands between someone and what threatens them. Abraham pleads for Sodom. Moses stands between Israel and God's judgement. Job prays for his friends. Jesus prays even now at the Father's right hand for His people (Rom 8:34; Heb 7:25). When you pray for someone else, you are joining an ancient, honoured work — you are standing in a gap only love thinks to stand in.

Common misunderstandings

“Intercession changes God's mind.”
What Scripture says
God invites us into what He has already decided is good. He answers real prayers with real change — 'the LORD relented' (Ex 32:14) — while His character never shifts.

“Only 'prayer warriors' intercede.”
What Scripture says
Every believer is called to intercede (1 Tim 2:1). Even 'wordless groans' from the Spirit count (Rom 8:26).
Living the text
Write three names down. Pray for them by name today, tomorrow, this week. Intercession is not eloquence; it is loyalty. Stand between someone you love and what is coming at them, and let heaven decide what to do with your words.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You still intercede for me. Teach me to intercede for others — not with pretty words, but with faithful ones. Move me to my knees for someone today. Amen.
