Righteousness
tsedaqah (צְדָקָה) / dikaiosunē (δικαιοσύνη)
Righteousness is right standing with God and right living before Him — a gift given in Christ and a life shaped by His character.

First appearance in the Bible
Genesis 15:6.'Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness' — the Bible's first explicit righteousness, given not earned.
Biblical meaning
Righteousness in Scripture is not moral perfection you climb toward. It is right relationship: with God, with neighbour, with truth. Tsedaqah is often paired with justice (mishpat) — it names a life woven into the fabric of God's world. Abraham is 'credited' with righteousness because he believed God. The prophets thunder against religion without righteousness. Jesus is 'the Righteous One' (Acts 3:14). And in Christ, His righteousness is given to us as a gift (2 Cor 5:21). Then we live out what has been given — 'the fruit of righteousness' grows in us (Phil 1:11).

The bride is clothed in 'fine linen … the righteous acts of God's holy people' (Rev 19:8).

Common misunderstandings
Claim
“Righteousness is earned by good behaviour.”
What Scripture says
Abraham was 'credited' with it by faith (Gen 15:6). Paul insists it is 'apart from works' (Rom 3:28). It is received, then lived out.
Claim
“Once justified, righteous living does not matter.”
What Scripture says
The same Bible that says 'made righteous' also expects 'fruit of righteousness' (Phil 1:11). The gift produces the life.
Claim
“Righteousness is a private, personal thing.”
What Scripture says
In the Old Testament it always includes justice for the poor (Amos 5:24). Personal and public are inseparable.
Living the text
Stop trying to build a righteousness of your own. Receive Christ's, and then let it walk. Where has God asked you to be honest, kind, or just today? Righteousness is not an emotion — it is a shape a life takes when it belongs to God.
Prayer
Righteous One, I bring You no résumé. Clothe me in Your righteousness, and let that gift walk into my day — honest words, right actions, love for the overlooked. Amen.
