Be Strong And Courageous

He is with you wherever you go.

Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

Why this promise matters

A word for this season

God said this to a man who had just lost his mentor and was being asked to lead a frightened nation across a river he had never crossed before. Joshua was not strong because he felt strong. He was strong because the One sending him refused to leave him.

If you are standing at the edge of something hard, this verse is not a slogan. It is a hand on your shoulder. The same God who walked with Joshua is the One walking with you.

Reflection

Receiving the promise

Look at the structure of the sentence. Be strong. Be courageous. Do not fear. Do not be discouraged. Four imperatives. And then, the reason. For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

The courage is not produced inside you. It is the result of what is true about Him. He is with you. That is the foundation under every step you are afraid to take.

Notice the word "wherever". Not in the places you choose. Not only in the rooms where you feel competent. Wherever. The hospital. The courtroom. The empty house. The new city. The conversation you have been dreading.

God does not say He will remove the giants. He says He will go with you to face them. Courage in Scripture is almost never the absence of fear. It is moving forward because Someone trustworthy is moving with you.

If today you can only manage the next small step, take the next small step. That is courage. He counts the small obediences. He sees the trembling yes.

A word to carry

He is with me wherever I go. I do not walk this alone.

A prayer inspired by the passage

Pray with me

Lord, I am afraid of what is in front of me. I do not feel strong. I do not feel ready. I am tempted to stay where it is familiar even though I know You are calling me forward.

Be the courage I cannot manufacture. Walk with me into the room I am dreading. Steady my hand. Slow my breath. Let me feel the truth that You are with me, not waiting for me on the other side, but already here.

In Jesus' name. Amen.
