From the garments God makes for Adam and Eve to the robe placed on the returning son, the coat in Scripture is what God provides to cover what we cannot cover ourselves.
First appearance
The first coat in the Bible is not made by human hands. After Adam and Eve sew fig leaves and hide, God Himself makes them garments of skin and clothes them. Scripture is spare about the detail, but the pattern is unmistakable. Before we ever cover ourselves, God covers us. And the covering costs something.
Why does God make garments in Eden?
After Adam and Eve eat, they see their nakedness and sew fig leaves. God calls them out, hears their fear, speaks of the promised offspring, and then does something quiet and stunning. He makes garments of skin and clothes them Himself. The first covering in the Bible is provided, not manufactured.

Isaiah says, He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness. Zechariah watches as the LORD strips filthy garments off Joshua the high priest and puts festal robes on him. And in , a father runs to his ruined son and calls for the best robe. In every case, the garment is given, not earned.
What are the redeemed wearing at the end?
In John's vision, a great multitude stands before the throne, clothed in white robes, waving palm branches. They are, we are told, those who have come out of the great tribulation, and they washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. At the end, the covering is still His.
Christ at the center
From Eden to Revelation, the coat in Scripture is the sign that God covers what we cannot. He gave garments of skin to a couple hiding in leaves. He gave a robe to a son rehearsing a speech. He gives robes made white by the blood of the Lamb to a multitude no one can number. The gospel wears clothes we did not sew.
One final word
The redeemed are not naked at the throne. They are clothed in white, and every stitch of it points to the Lamb.

That is present, but the coat is a symbol Scripture uses to trace Joseph's whole arc: favor, suffering, providence, promotion. The coat leaves and returns because God is telling a bigger story.

Being clothed in righteousness means becoming more religious.
What Scripture actually says
Scripture pictures it as a garment given, not tailored. Isaiah rejoices because God clothed him. The prodigal did not earn the robe. The gospel is not moral self-improvement in nicer clothes.

Elijah's mantle had power in itself.
What Scripture actually says
Elisha's question is the point: Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah? The mantle is a sign. God is the One who parts the water.
Reading like a student of Scripture
Every time you see clothing in Scripture, pause and ask three quiet questions. Who is doing the clothing? What is being covered? And what does the garment cost? You will almost always find a picture of grace.
