To be made in God's image is to be made for relationship, responsibility, and royalty under Him, never as a god, always as His.

Genesis 1:26-27
The Bible's first statement about humanity is not what we do, but whose image we bear. God says, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness. Both male and female are named as image-bearers in the same breath. The phrase is repeated three times in two verses, which is Scripture's way of saying, do not miss this.
What did 'image' mean in the ancient world?
Kings, idols, and Genesis
In the ancient Near East, a king's image was placed at the edges of his territory to say, this land is mine. Idols in temples were called the image of the god. Genesis takes this loaded language and does something stunning: every human, not only the king, not a carved statue, is God's living image in His world.
What is the image of God for?
Made to reflect, made to rule under God
Image-bearing is given a job: fill the earth, steward it, name it, care for it. Psalm 8 calls it being crowned with glory and honor. To be in God's image is to be a representative, not a replacement. Authority is real, but it is always under Him.
Did sin erase the image?
Cracked, not erased
After the fall, still calls Adam's son the image of his father, and the image of God language is still applied. grounds the sacredness of human life in image-bearing. James warns that the same tongue cannot bless God and curse those made in His likeness. Sin distorts the image. It does not delete it.
Who is the true image of God?
The image with a face
Paul calls Christ the image of the invisible God. Hebrews says He is the exact imprint of God's nature. To see Jesus is to see, in human shape, what humanity was always meant to be. Every other image-bearer is being measured by Him, and remade toward Him.
How does image-bearing change how I see people?
Every face, an icon
If every human bears God's image, then there are no unimportant people. The unborn, the elderly, the stranger, the prisoner, the enemy, all carry the same dignity. Jesus pushes this further in , when He says what is done to the least is done to Him.

Where this symbol meets Jesus
names Jesus the image of the invisible God. Everything Genesis hints about humanity finds its true shape in Him. He is the image bearer who never broke the mirror. To be united to Him is to begin to look like Him again.

Reading like a student of Scripture
When Scripture speaks of image (tselem, eikon), pause and ask what it is being connected to: dignity, dominion, family resemblance, Christ, or restoration. The word carries different weight in each setting. Watch also for the reverse: idolatry is always the making of a false image. is God's answer to every idol ever carved.
