Staff
In God's hand, an ordinary shepherd's stick parts seas, defeats armies, buds with life, and, in Psalm 23, comforts the sheep. The staff is what God uses.
First appearance
Exodus 4:2-4
The staff is not new when Moses meets God at the bush. Every shepherd in the ancient Near East carried one. What is new is God's question: What is that in your hand? Moses answers, A staff. God says, Throw it on the ground. And an ordinary tool becomes the visible sign that this deliverance is God's, not Moses'.

A dead stick that blossoms
After Korah's rebellion, God tells Moses to gather twelve staves, one for each tribe, and lay them in the tent of meeting. Overnight, Aaron's staff buds, blossoms, and produces ripe almonds. God settles the question of priesthood by making a dead piece of wood come to life.
How can a rod and a staff comfort?
In the shadow, He carries both
David does not say, You will not lead me through the shadow of death. He says, Even though I walk through it, You are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. The rod protects the flock. The staff guides. In the darkest valley, both are in the Shepherd's hand.
What kind of King carries a staff?
The Shepherd-King
Ezekiel promises a day when God Himself will shepherd His people. Jesus says, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. Revelation shows Him ruling the nations with a rod of iron. The staff and the throne are in the same hand.
Where does the staff end in the Bible?
The Shepherd stays with the flock
The Lamb who was slain becomes the Shepherd who leads. In the new creation, He guides the redeemed to springs of living water and God Himself wipes every tear from their eyes. The staff is still in His hand. It always was.

Every staff in Scripture points to a Shepherd. Moses' staff signalled that God was fighting. Aaron's budded staff signalled that God chooses the true priest. David's Shepherd carries both rod and staff. Jesus says, I am the good shepherd, and He lays down His life for the sheep. To be His is to be led by that staff, all the way home.

In the new creation, the Lamb who was slain is the Shepherd who stays. The staff never leaves His hand.

Hebrews keeps it inside the ark as a lasting witness. It is Scripture's early picture of God bringing life out of what is dead, which is the very shape of the resurrection.

In shepherd language, the rod defends the flock from predators and counts the sheep as they come home. David calls it a comfort, not a threat.
Reading like a student of Scripture
When you meet a staff or rod in Scripture, pause and ask three quiet questions. Whose hand is it in? What is it doing (guiding, protecting, judging, providing)? And where does the shepherd imagery lead in the story? Follow the hand, and you will find a Person.
