Forgiveness
Forgiveness is God cancelling the debt of sin at the cost of Christ, and calling His people to release others in the same way.

First appearance in the Bible
Genesis 45:5.Joseph, betrayed by his brothers, speaks the Bible's first extended act of human forgiveness: 'do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here.'
Biblical meaning
Forgiveness in Scripture is not pretending the wound did not happen. It is choosing to release the debt God has already released in Christ. It flows downhill: because we have been forgiven at infinite cost, we can forgive at real cost. Biblical forgiveness is grounded in the cross, not in the offender's apology. It does not always mean restored trust or reopened doors. It always means unclenched hands, and a life no longer ruled by yesterday.

Joseph forgives his brothers and names it God's plan (Gen 45; 50).

Forgiveness is first a decision (Col 3:13). Feelings follow, sometimes slowly.

“Forgiveness always means restored trust.”
What Scripture says
Trust is rebuilt over time; forgiveness can be given today. They are not the same.
Living the text
Name the debt honestly before God. Then, out loud, hand it to the One who was already handed the cross for you. If the wound is deep, you may need to release it again tomorrow, and the day after. That is not failure. That is a heart being trained to look more like its Father.
Prayer
Father, You have forgiven me more than I could ever repay. Loosen the grip of every debt I am still carrying against another. Where I cannot forgive, forgive through me. Amen.
