Hesed

chesed (חֶסֶד)

Hesed is God's loyal, covenant love — kindness that stays when it does not have to, mercy that keeps promises we could not keep.

Scripture first

Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

Genesis 24:12.Abraham's servant prays for hesed in finding a wife for Isaac — the word enters Scripture as covenant kindness sought in prayer.

Biblical meaning

Hesed is a Hebrew word English cannot translate with one word. It carries loyal love, covenant kindness, and mercy that stays when it does not have to. It is the word for a friend who does not leave, a God who keeps promises made to people who broke theirs. Ruth shows hesed to Naomi. Boaz shows hesed to Ruth. And behind both of them, God is showing hesed to a world that keeps wandering. Every 'steadfast love' and 'lovingkindness' in your English Old Testament is this one Hebrew word.

  1. Patriarchs

    Abraham's servant appeals to God's hesed (Gen 24:12).

  2. Exodus

    God self-defines as 'abounding in hesed and faithfulness' (Ex 34:6).

  3. Ruth

    Hesed is shown between Ruth, Naomi, Boaz — and by God through them (Ruth 1-4).

  4. Psalms

    Psalm 136 repeats 'His hesed endures forever' 26 times.

  5. Prophets

    'I desire mercy (hesed), not sacrifice' (Hos 6:6).

  6. New Testament

    Hesed lives on in the Greek eleos (mercy) and charis (grace) fulfilled in Christ.

Common misunderstandings

    Hesed just means 'love.'

    It is love bound by covenant — a promise-keeping love, not a mood.

  • Claim

    God's hesed depends on my performance.

    What Scripture says

    Hesed is God's own commitment to Himself. It endures 'forever' (Ps 136) precisely because it does not lean on us.

Living the text

Ask God to make you a hesed person: someone who shows up when it costs, keeps small promises, and does not disappear when a friend's life stops being convenient. That is what makes a family, a marriage, a church, look like God.

Prayer

LORD of hesed, Your mercies are new every morning. Anchor me in love that does not leave, and make me quick to show it to someone who has stopped expecting kindness. Amen.
