He Will Finish What He Began
God is not finished with you.
Philippians 1:6 (NIV)
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Why this promise matters
A word for this season
If you have ever looked at your life and thought, I should be further along by now, this verse is for you. Paul writes it not because the church in Philippi was finished. He writes it because they were in process. And he was certain that the One who started the work would finish it.
You are not the project. He is the worker. Your unfinishedness is not evidence that He has stopped. It is the very thing He is still working on.
Reflection
Receiving the promise
Notice the verb. Began. He started this. The work in your life is not yours to complete. It is His to carry. The pressure you have been putting on yourself to be the finisher belongs to someone else.
Carry on to completion. That is the language of a craftsman who refuses to abandon a piece. He does not give up on the wood halfway through. He does not put down the brush before the painting is done. He finishes.
Until the day of Christ Jesus. That is the timeline. Not next Tuesday. Not by the end of the year. The whole of your life. He has time.
If you are tempted to look at yourself today and pronounce yourself a failure, hear what Paul says. Be confident. Not in your progress. In His commitment.
A word to carry
“I am not the finisher. He is. And He has not stopped.”
A prayer inspired by the passage
Pray with me
Father, I am tired of judging myself by where I think I should be. Forgive me for treating Your timeline like my own. Thank You for not abandoning the work You started.
Help me trust that You are still at work in me, even on the days I cannot see the progress. Carry me to completion. I am Yours.
In Jesus' name. Amen.
What are you carrying today?
If this is where you are
“I should be further along by now.”
By whose measure? He is the One finishing this, and He is not late.
“I keep failing in the same ways.”
He has not given up on you. The work is not done. Neither is His grace.
