The Bible begins in a garden and ends in a garden city. In between, God is always making places where He can be with His people.
First appearance
The LORD God plants a garden Himself. He places the man there. He walks in the cool of the day. From the beginning, a garden in the Bible is not a place humans escape to. It is a place God prepares so He can be near.
What kind of place is Eden?
Eden is described with the same language later used for the tabernacle: a place where God walks, where humans serve and keep, where rivers flow out to bless the world. Scripture treats Eden as the first sanctuary, and humanity as its first priesthood.
Why are we east of Eden?
After the fall, Adam and Eve are sent east of the garden. Cherubim guard the way back. The rest of the Bible is, in one sense, the story of God making a way back into His presence. Every later sanctuary, from tabernacle to temple, is an echo of Eden.
How does the tabernacle remember the garden?
The lampstand is shaped like a tree with branches, blossoms, and almonds. The temple walls are carved with palm trees and cherubim, like the cherubim that guarded Eden's gate. Israel's worship spaces are deliberately built as a garden remembered.
Why does the gospel pass through a garden?
John alone tells us that Jesus was arrested in a garden and buried in a garden. On Easter morning, Mary mistakes the risen Christ for the gardener. She is closer to the truth than she knows. The first Adam failed in a garden. The last Adam obeys in one and rises in another.
How does the Bible end?
Revelation closes with a city that has a river running through it and the tree of life on either side. Eden is not merely restored. It is matured into a city where God dwells with His people forever. The first garden becomes the final home.
Christ at the center
Jesus is the way back into the garden. By His obedience in Gethsemane and His resurrection in a garden tomb, the cherubim's flaming sword is finally put down. Every believer is already being brought home.

Genesis knows the surrounding stories and answers them. Eden is not one god's leftover garden. It is the true God's sanctuary, and humans are its priesthood, not its slaves.

-22 shows Eden matured into a city. Scripture's direction is not backward to a lost garden but forward through it, to a home no snake ever entered.

John chooses his details carefully. Only he mentions the garden of the arrest and the garden of the tomb. Mary calls Jesus the gardener. The pattern is intentional theology, not scenic backdrop.
Reading like a student of Scripture
When you read of gardens, groves, springs, and trees in Scripture, watch for the temple echoes: cherubim, tree of life, river, presence. Watch for the reverse too, when Israel plants gardens to idols on high places (). Gardens are never neutral in the Bible. They are always about who is being worshipped.
